Spa Review: Elemis Spa at the Village of Merrick Park

A couple of weeks ago I visited Elemis Spa at the Village of Merrick Park. The spa is tucked away in a quiet corner of the shopping center and is the perfect place to unwindafter a long day of shopping or if you're just looking to relax. I had a Thai Poultice massage, which was actually the first time I had ever tried this type of massage. There are aspects of the massage that are very common to a full body massage, with the exception that they rub the warm poultice in a way that massages and warms your body at the same time. My masseuse was absolutely amazing. I arrived a few minutes early and got to enjoy some time in their relaxation room. Overall, I had a great experience. The staff is really nice and the spa also offers a full service hair and nail salon.

Essensia at The Palms Hotel & Spa

Last night I was invited to experience Essensia, the gourmet restaurant at The Palms Hotel. This was actually my first visit to the hotel and I fell in love. It has all the bohemian Miami Beach charm, yet still so sophisticated and elegant. The food at Essensia was nothing short of incredible - from the seafood appetizer special and the Orchid Petal Salad (rumor has it that this salad is a favorite of the Kardashian sisters) to the Cinnamon-Cranberry Braised Beef Short Ribs and Grass-Fed Angus Sirloin. But before I even ordered, our knowledeable waiter Omar gave us the full low down on Executive Chef Frank Jeannetti who crafts his dishes using local, seasonal, sustainable and organic ingredients from places such as Paradise Farms in Homestead. Jeannetti's pedigree includes time at The Biltmore, Pacific Time, and Nemo. At Essensia, he's developed a menu which is populated with a healthful blend of global cuisine. After indulging in two fine selections from the dessert menu - the Meyer Lemon Tart and the Strawberry Panna Cotta - a walk around the hotel was in order. From the lush tropical gardens to the garden gazebo, The Palms is a little slice of paradise.

Vatican Splendors Arrives at Museum of Art

One of the largest collections of art, documents and historically significant objects from the Vatican ever to tour North America is now at the Museum of Art I Fort Lauderdale. I went this past weekend and had an amazing time. It features spectacular paintings by artists such as Giotto and Il Guercino and sculpture by Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini, along with unique objects illustrating the Catholic Church’s impact on history and culture.

The exhibition’s nearly 200 objects, many of which have never been on public view, are presented in the Museum’s galleries and in specially-created environments that enhance the visitor’s understanding of both the historical as well as the artistic significance of each work. Objects include paintings, mosaics, sculpture, jewels, intricately embroidered silk vestments, uniforms of the Papal Swiss Guard, as well as an elaborately decorated gold and silver reliquary containing bone fragments of Saint Peter and Saint Paul.

Dining Guide: Cvi.Che 105

For years city officials and urban planners have been pushing for -- and predicting -- a rebirth of Miami's central business district. After numerous fitful starts, the transformation of downtown Miami and Brickell Avenue into a 24-hour urban core has begun. Included in the transformation is amazing restaurants such as Cvi.Che 105. This has become probably my favorite Peruvian restaurant. The restaurant features traditional Peruvian dishes in a modern presentation combined with a chic atmosphere. If you're a big ceviche fan, than I recommend getting the Trilogy -- a plate a three different ceviches which range from mild, medium to spicy. For a traditional dish, then Lomo Saltado is the way to go. It's steak in a pozu sauce on a bed of white rice with french fries--absolutely delicious! This is restaurant is def. a great addition to the downtown scene.

Glenfiddich Launches "One Day You Will" Campaign

The other day, Fab Miami Guide attended a special evening at The Forge hosted by Glenfiddich in honor of their recently announced "One Day You Will" campaign. We had a chance to enjoy a tasting of some of their rarest single malt Scotch Whisky, which were filled with a landscape of flavors with every mouthful. My favorite was their 40 year old Glenfiddich, filled with bold and powerful flavor with hints of spicy notes. For those of you not familiar with Glenfiddich, they are an independent family-owned distiller headquartered in the U.K and founded by Wililam Grant in 1887. Most surprisingly, it actually is still run by the fifth generation of his family and distills some of the world's leading brands of Scotch whisky, including the world's most awarded single malt Glenfiddich. Their new multi-million dollar advertising and marketing campaign designed to bring the brand’s pioneering spirit to life and redefine expectations of the Single Malt category. For those of you scotch whisky drinkers, Glenfiddich is sure to not disappoint.

Review: Cirque du Soleil's 'Kooza'

I went to see Cirque du Soleil's Kooza for the first time yesterday and if I had to describe it in one word, it would definitely be AMAZING. The show is action-packed from contortionist, to astonishing acrobatics to singing, dancing and witty clowns that engaged the audience throughout the performance. “Kooza” centers around an elfish clown called The Innocent, who is drawn into a whimsical realm where a mad king presides over jesters, fools, thieves and a dizzying array of artists who defy the limits of what the human body can do. And those amazing acts are the core of the show, starting out with a trio of female contortionists followed by several other amazing acts such as tight rope walking, balancing acts, solo trapeze and much more.

My favorite of the night had to be the wheel of death. In this performance a 1,600 pound Wheel of Death rotates at heart-stopping speeds, powered only by the two artist who leap and counter-rotate in a death defying display of fearless acrobatics and astonishing teamwork. Overall, “Kooza” is definitely a MUST-SEE whether you’re going with friends, on a date or for a night-out with the family.

Kooza is now performing until January 2, 2011 at Bicentennial Park. Tickets can be purchased by calling 1800-450-1480 or online at www.cirquedusoleil.com/kooza. You don’t want to miss it.

Restaurants: db Bistro Moderne

South Floridians love gourmet bites and a great scene. Expect both at db Bistro Moderne in the new JW Marriott Marquis, the (much buzzed-about) restaurant marks celeb chef Daniel Boulud’s first foray into Miami (he operates a CafĂ© Boulod in Palm Beach). The menu features seasonal dishes crafted from American ingredients using French techniques. The classic example being Bouloud’s signature db burger – a ground Angus patty stuffed with braised short ribs, foie gras & black truffles then served on a Parmesan bun. Other menu items include tuna crudo, Maine lobster salad, tomato-braised bacalao, pompano and a lamb duo. Expect big things – from the food, the space and the crowd.

Sushi Maki's "Endless Sake Summer" $5 Menu

Craving sushi?! You have to check out Sushi Maki’s amazing new happy hour. Last night, I got a couple of friends together to take advantage of their new “Endless Sake Summer” menu. All summer long from 4-8pm, Sushi Maki offers $5 sushi rolls…and these rolls are substantial!! We ordered the Haystack and the Budda-Cane – both were delish. We also gave the Juicy Kobe Beef Sliders a chance and were not disappointed. Plus, if you’re a Sake lover, the restaurant is offering half-off sake selections every day of the week. We were at the new Mary Brickell Village location, which offers both indoor and outdoor seating. There was no wait for a table which was nice. Plus, furry friends are allowed! It’s going to be hard to keep me away from this place this summer. You’re definitely going to want to take advantage of this deal.

South Pointe Park- South Beach

This definitely has to be one of my favorite parks in Miami....although it isn't no Central Park, the image of people having picnics, walking their dogs and simply taking a stroll along the boardwalk, was a bit reminiscent of Central Park..with a Miami twist of course (there was even a couple practicing yoga right next to me). I had my first picnic there last week with my husband and my two doggies. It was amazing, not only was the weather perfect (the cool weather we are experiencing in Miami now is perfect for picnics) but at about 5pm you get to see the cruise ships on their way out to sea. All the little kids at the park gathered to wave good-bye to the ships..it was too cute. For those of you that haven't been there yet...I recommend you do.

Where to Go This Weekend: Billie Swamp Safari

Looking for something fun and exciting to do this weekend? Why not try something different and take a trip to Billie Swamp Safari. It’s about a 1 ½ hour drive from Miami and is located on the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation. I went a couple of months ago and had an amazing time. I did the Swamp Buggy Eco-Tour, which I strongly recommend. It’s a one hour tour aboard a buggy that takes you through the Everglades’ wet prairie. You get to see all kinds of animals from alligators, crocodiles, deer, antelope, bison to razorback hogs. You sometimes might even get lucky and spot the rare Florida panther.

I also did the air boat ride, which was a lot of fun. They also have a snake and alligator show as well as a Swamp Critter show scheduled daily. If you’re a bit of an adventurer you can even stay overnight in a traditional Seminole chickee. Right now is a great time to go since you don’t have to worry about mosquitoes, but if you go in the summer just make sure to take some mosquito repellent. Click here to check out their prices.

p.s. For those of you Real Housewives of Orange County fans, this is where the girls went on the episode in which they visited West Palm Beach.
